Tenminste, vanaf morgen dan... Maar als jullie dit lezen, is het dat al, vermoed ik... ;-)

Vandaag werd de Amsterdamse bibliotheek in Second Life (SL) geopend. Directeur Hans van Velzen kwam hoogstpersoonlijk naar SL om, staande in een boek, ballonnetjes op te laten.

Volgens het persbericht is in SL alles mogelijk. Zo heeft onze Harry Mulisch eindelijk een Nobelprijs gekregen en kun je gratis boeken halen uit een automaat. Inderdaad, dingen die we in het echte leven wel niet zullen meemaken!


Bezoek de Harry Mulischkamer of kleed je als Herman Brood en trap wat tegen rondslingerende verfblikken! Er wordt nog volop gebouwd aan de Amsterdamse bieb, maar er is al veel leuks te beleven.


Overigens moet het vooral een ontdekbibliotheek worden, een ontmoetingsplaats ook in een veilige, niet-commerciële omgeving. Met gratis muziek, een strandbieb, zelfs skydiving en een disco. Kom daar bij een echte bieb maar eens om hè!

Er is in ieder geval niet lukraak gekopieerd uit het echte leven. Het voorbeeld voor het gebouw is wel de nieuwbouw van de echte Amsterdamse bieb... Maar in SL zijn de daken en trappen uit het gebouw gesloopt... en kun je door de muren lopen. Tentoonstellingen en activiteiten en zo worden vooral buiten gehouden.

Today the Amsterdam Library in Second Life (SL) was opened. Director Hans van Velzen came to SL in person and, while standing in a big book, let some little balloons fly up.

According to the press notice, in SL anything is possible. For example our Harry Mulisch has finally got himself that Nobel prize and you can have books from an automat too. Indeed, we will not see such things in real life!


Try visiting the Harry Mulisch room or dress like Herman Brood and kick some paint cans, littering around! There is still lots of building to be done at the Amsterdam library, but many nice things can be experienced already.


By the way, it will be mostly a library for discovering new things, also a meeting place in a safe, non-commercial environment, including free music, a beach library, even skydiving and a disco. Try finding that at a real library, huh?

Well, for one thing at least they have not just copied all real life things in-world. The model for the building was the newly build real life Amsterdam library... But in SL they have demolished the roofs and stairs of it... and you can walk through walls too. Exhibitions and activities will be held outside most of the times.
