Ik ben uniek / I am unique

Afgelopen maandag weer een werkgroepbijeenkomst van mijn Zuidland-project gehad. Daarin ging het onder andere over het fenomeen personalisatie van websites. Een kenmerk van web 2.0 is het feit dat internet je bureaublad wordt, en zo wil je het dus ook kunnen inrichten en gebruiken.

Een hele hoop websites bieden tegenwoordig mogelijkheden om de site naar je persoonlijke hand te zetten. Als jij graag een bloemetjesbehang wilt als achtergrond van het forum? Moet kunnen. Je eigen foto's hier en je eigen filmpjes daar. En natuurlijk je eigen kleurtjes ook: subtiel beige of felle zuurstokvarianten.

Waarom?
Ik heb daar nog niet echt veel over gelezen - zoals gezegd ben ik niet zo'n lezerig type - maar ik heb wel wat ideetjes. Misschien komt het wel omdat we allemaal steeds meer in groepen opgaan. Communities op internet zijn ook weer een goed voorbeeld daarvan. En daarin willen we graag ons eigen hoekje kunnen inrichten. Toch een beetje onszelf, anders dan anderen. Uniek.

Ik dacht daar weer aan, toen ik vanmiddag eens de pagina met statistieken van de Archief 2.0 community bezocht en daarin bekeek wat de meest populaire pagina's waren. Op de eerste plaats natuurlijk de homepage. Da's nogal logisch. Maar op de tweede plaats al de pagina waarop de appearance kan worden aangepast. Juist... daar behang je je hoekje met bloemetjesbehang en daar stel je je zuurstokkleurtjes in!

En toevallig dat een collega van mij een aantal dagen daarvoor met zijn ICT-team op bezoek bij Fontys in Eindhoven was geweest. Ook hij hoorde dat het personaliseren van dingen op internet een belangrijk thema was voor bijvoorbeeld studenten. Ergens ook weer een soort tegenhanger misschien van het steeds meer virtualiseren van de netwerkomgeving.

Second Life
En hoe zit dat dan in Second Life (SL)? Nou, eigenlijk niet veel anders. Net als in de nieuwe archivarissencommunity mensen beginnen met het inrichten van hun eigen hoekje, zijn de meeste nieuwkomers in SL de eerste uurtjes van hun tweede leven zoet met het aanpassen van hun nieuwe ik. Een ander kapsel, wat meer wasbord en een ander kleurtje. Erg belangrijk!

Zelf had ik in eerste instantie geen fluit gedaan aan dat pupke van mij. Alleen het shirt had ik oranje gemaakt en de broek blauw. En dat zijn ze nog steeds. Alhoewel ik nu ook oranje haar heb en een wat blankere huid. De vorige was wel erg mediteraan, namelijk.

Maar ondanks dat mij dit vijf minuten heeft gekost en anderen vijf uur... hebben we precies hetzelfde gedaan. We hebben ons poppetje uniek willen maken. Zelfs ik - en ik geef eigenlijk geen donder om m'n digitale uiterlijk, zoals ook aan mijn persoonlijke hoekje in Ning is te zien - heb mezelf met die oranje look tot een uniek digitaal individu willen maken.

Mijn poppetje is uit velen herkenbaar en ik maak er zelfs graag grappen over dat ik nog steeds met noob hair rondloop (noob is een wat negatieve verwijzing naar alles wat je hebt als je pas in SL aankomt)... maar m'n wangen kleuren bij m'n shirt als mensen er iets positiefs van zeggen, want zelfs dat haar is zo uniek... :-) Ik mag dat kleine, oranje mannetje wel! Ik ben het zelf.

Wijze les...
En wat kan ik hier nou mee? Nou, veel dus. Het toont een trend. Het toont dat je rekening moet houden met deze trend, als je iets geslaagds wil doen op het internet. Als je dus bezig bent met iets community-achtigs te ontwikkelen voor je publiek, dan kun je er maar beter voor zorgen dat mensen er hun eigen hoekje kunnen creëren. Dat ze de gereedschappen hebben om zich daar uniek te voelen. Of het nu door middel van kleurtjes is of door het binnenhalen van persoonlijke foto's.

Want in het ons uniek willen voelen... zijn we allemaal gelijk!

Maar...
Euh... toch nog een maar... Stel dat ik nu iets anders leer, als ik hier de komende dagen eens wat over ga lezen, dan horen jullie het wel weer van me. :-)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Last Monday yet another group meeting for my Southland project at work. One of the things we came to talk about was personalisation of websites. One characteristic of web 2.0 is the fact that the internet will develop to be your desktop, so you want to organise and use it just like your desktop too.

Lots of websites these days offer possibilities for changing the site as you see fit. If you like to have a flower wallpaper on the background of the forum? Should be possible. And of course you should be able to change the colours too: subtle beige or just bright candy colours.

Why?
I haven't read that much about this myself yet - like I said earlier I'm not much of a reader type of guy - but I do have some idea's about this all. Maybe it's caused by the fact that we all seem to absorbed in groups more and more. Communities on the internet are another good example for that happening. And because of that, we all like to have our own little corner there. A little bit on our own, different from others. Unique.

I thought about that, when I visited the statistics page of the Archive 2.0 community this afternoon and looked for the most popular pages from it. First of all the homepage, of course. That makes sense. But on second place already the page at which you are able to change the appearance of your page. Right... that's the place where you put up the flower wallpaper and paint your corner with the candy colours!

Coincidentally a colleague of mine, together with his ICT team, visited Fontys in Eindhoven (a Dutch education centre) a couple of days before. Also there he heard that personalizing of things on the internet was an important issue for students, for example. maybe somewhere a contra effect for all the virtualisation going on in networks these days too.

Second Life
And how about this in Second Life (SL)? Well, not that different actually. Just like people are starting with developing their own little corner in the archivists community, most of the newcomers in SL are first of all busy for quite some hours with changing their new me. A different hair cut, a bit more muscles and a little colour change. All very important!

I hadn't done much about that little doodle of mine. Just coloured the shirt orange and made the pants blue. And they still are. Although I coloured my hair orange too and made my skin look a bit more white. It looked too much Mediterranean before, that's why.

But although I only spend like five minutes on this and others did five hours... we in fact still did the same thing. We tried to make our avatar look unique. Even myself - and I really don't care at all about my digital appearance, like you all can tell from my own little corner in Ning - have tried to make myself look like an unique digital individual with the orange look.

My avatar is recognisable amongst many and I even like to joke about the fact that I'm still wearing noob hair (noob is a less flattering word for everything that's there when you just signed up for your second life)... but my cheeks start colouring my shirt when someone makes nice comments about it, because even that hair like that is unique... :-) I even like the little orange guy! It's me.

Wise lesson...
So, what can I learn from all of this? Well, much, I guess. It shows a trend. It shows that you have to keep that trend in mind, while trying to do something on the internet that you want to succeed. So if you're busy with developing something community-like for your customers, you better make sure people can furnish their own little corner in there. That they will be able to use tools there to make themselves feel like they are unique. By having some different colours or by having imported personal photos, doesn't matter.

Because in trying to be unique... we are really all the same!

But...
Eh... still a but... Suppose that I learn about something different, while I read about this in the next few days, of course I'll let you hear about it. :-)
